DESCRIPTION:My main aim in this talk is to introduce some noti
ons on\nhow results from commutative algebra and a
lgebraic geometry can be\nused in analysis of stat
istical models\, in particular\, maximum entropy\n
models. First\, I will give a brief introduction o
f Grobner bases and\nits applications to algebraic
geometry. I will show that maximum\nentropy model
s can be described with toric ideals by embedding
them in\nalgebraic varieties (by means of the Zari
ski closure). Based on these ideas\,\nI will prese
nt some algebraic methods for estimation of these
models along\n with some applications. Finally\, I
will discuss some ideas and problems on\n certain
algebraic quantities serving as complexity measur
es for these\nmodels.\n
