DESCRIPTION:I will focus on online optimization of AC power sy
stems in closed loop. In contrast to the conventio
nal approach where an optimal power flow solution
is computed offline and online controllers enforce
these set-points\, our objective is to design an
adaptive feedback controller that steers the syste
m robustly and in real time to the optimal operati
ng point. Our methodological approach is based on
online algorithms for manifold optimization that c
an be applied in feedback with real-time measureme
nts and actuation. We treat the power flow equatio
ns as implicit constraints that are naturally enfo
rced by the physics and hence give rise to the pow
er flow manifold. Based on our theoretical results
for this type of optimization problems\, we propo
se a projected gradient descent scheme on the powe
r flow manifold. In detailed simulation case studi
es we validate the performance of our algorithm an
d show that it reliably tracks the time-varying op
timum of the underlying AC optimal power flow prob
lem.
