DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will outline some of the recent w
ork we have been\ndoing in Cardiff studying the fo
rmation of low mass stars. I will\ncover the progr
ess that we have made in understanding the origin
of\nthe stellar IMF and it's relation to the mass
function of pre-stellar\ncores. I will demonstrate
the role of triggering in the formation of\nstars
in a dark cloud in Ophiuchus\, and also in the ho
rsehead nebula.\nI will also describe how far-IR a
 nd sub-mm data\, together with\nradiative transfer
modeling has allowed us to study whether the\npro
perties of dust grains change as a function of den
sity in a dense\nfilament. These topics all provid
 e a backdrop to the up-coming JCMT\nGould Belt Leg
acy survey\, which I will outline.
