DESCRIPTION:Wolfson College is pleased to be hosting the inaug
ural event in the Black Cantabs 2018-2019 Seminar
Series. The event will be followed by a reception.
\n\nThe Cambridge University Ghanaian Society\, th
e Black Cantabs Research Society\, and the African
Students and Scholars Union (Western Europe) invi
te you to our forum under the broad theme: The Pan
 -African Promise: Past\, Present\, and Futures.\n\
nBob Brown\, a Pan-Africanist and civil rights adv
ocate who worked closely with the late Martin Luth
er King Jr\, will speak to a wide range of topics
that reflect on the strategies Africans could depl
oy to bridge the ideological and cultural gaps bet
ween Africans on the continent and those in the di
aspora. He will also reflect on and recapitulate t
he key themes of the sixtieth anniversary of the A
ll African People’s Conference that Dr. Kwame Nkru
mah organised in Accra in 1958.\n\nAttempts will b
e made to reincarnate and reevaluate the reasons N
krumah adduced for continental and inter-continent
al unity among Africans\, and also reinforce the r
esolve of African leaders to combat neocolonialism
and forces of imperialism in the postcolonial wor
ld. Considering the fact that the paths of interna
tional politics lead to Africa as well as other pa
rts of the so-called third world countries\, reeng
aging the discourse on Pan-Africanism will signal
a new understanding of the nuances of geopolitics
and its ubiquitous impact on Africans. This will c
hart new path for Bob Brown to discuss the fluidit
y and dynamism of the philosophical underpinning o
 f Pan-Africanism in contemporary geopolitics.\n\nT
he emerging issues of the illegality and criminali
ty of the Trans-Atlantic slavery and other forms o
f modern slavery will also be discussed as ways of
engaging issues of human rights. Questions will b
e taken at the end of the discussion\, and the eve
nt will be followed by a drinks reception.\n\nThe
Black Cantabs Society was co-founded by a Wolfson
Visiting Scholar from Kenya\, Godfrey Sang. Find o
ut more about them on their website and Facebook p
age.\n\nBob Brown is a researcher and writer\, lec
turer and organizer. He has served in the student\
, civil and human rights\, Pan-African and sociali
 st\, peace\, anti-repression and other movements f
or 55 years. He is a former member of the Chicago
Chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality\, forme
r director of the Midwest Office of the Student No
nviolent Coordinating Committee\, supporter of the
Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and the Lown
des County Freedom Organization\, and founder and
former member of the Illinois Chapter of the Black
Panther Party. He has worked with and supported h
undreds of local\, national and international move
 ments\, organizations and parties.
