DESCRIPTION:The aim of the research is to identify a practical
  methodology for quantification of environmental i
 mpacts due to geotechnical infrastructures. The id
 ea is to compare the quantifiable environmental im
 pacts of construction solutions designed according
  to the same specification for a range of geotechn
 ical structures\; through which a short list of re
 presentative environmental impact indicators is th
 en identified. The properties of these indicators 
 should be easy to understand and use. \n\nAn indic
 ator the research is paying particular attention t
 o is embodied energy\, this is the total energy th
 at is attributed to bringing an object to its exis
 ting state. Embodied energy and Life Cycle Analysi
 s (LCA) case studies were carried out – on retaini
 ng walls\, foundation designs and the on a compari
 son between the slabtracks and conventional ballas
 ted embankment design. At this stage\, we find tha
 t there are strong correlations between embodied e
 nergy and the values of more established indicator
 s such as CO2 emission and Eco-Indicators etc for 
 geotechnical infrastructures. It is thus evident t
 hat embodied energy is one of the meaningful impac
 t indicators. \n
