DESCRIPTION:
Single component biology is past\; Bioengineer
ing has begun
\n\n\nIntegration of different f
ields within biological research is now obligatory
for scientists seeking to answer challenges in hu
man health and medicine. These are the days of vas
t data sets\, novel systems and complex informatio
n. The future of biology is now not limited to bio
logists\, chemists and medics but one also involvi
ng mathematicians\, physicists and engineers. The
huge influx of new ideas and principles being brou
ght in from these ‘foreign’ disciplines means we a
re no longer restricted to reductively studying bi
ology but can apply these to biotechnology\, medic
ine and engineering.\n\nDevelopments at the Univer
sity of Cambridge have been wide ranging and signi
ficant\; from synthetic biology and biofuels to ce
llular biomechanics and tissue engineering. This H
ORIZON seminar\, taking place at the Centre for Ma
thematical Sciences\, will demonstrate how bioengi
neering exploits these new developments and applie
s them to providing technical solutions to current
and emerging health and environmental concerns.\n
\nThe event will be of vital interest to pharmaceu
tical and medical device manufacturers\, researche
rs in the agrichemical\, environmental and biotech
nology sectors\, and doctors and other health prof
essionals. \n
