Presenter: Zauresh Kazybayeva, PhD student, Graduate School of Education, Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan

The Design studio is the heart of architectural education. Usually, instructors in Kazakhstani architecture schools use the teacher-centered task-based approach in Design studios. Such kinds of instruction are justified by saying that Core Courses at architectural schools in Kazakhstan are developed based on the State Standards which have a more detailed description of what, when and how to teach. This paper presents the preliminary results of conducting an action research study in architectural school in Astana, Kazakhstan. The main purpose of this action research was to engage students in a constructivist learning environment through using active learning in the Design Studio at undergraduate level. This presentation will outline the positive outcomes and challenges of implementing student-centered instruction. In addition, the action research project is examined as a tool for teacher professional development in higher education.
