If you have a question about this talk, please contact div-c. Traffic noise due to tyres rolling on road surfaces is a significant cause of irritation and distress. It arises from tyre vibrations caused by the impact of tread elements on road asperities. This process is difficult to model, demanding as it does time-domain simulations of a random contact process. Hence it is desirable to simplify individual components; the tyre belt, for example, is often represented as a thin plate. The talk is concerned with the viability of this approximation. We consider waves propagating on an infinite plate with composition typical of a tyre belt. This case admits exact solutions for the freely propagating waves that can be sustained. On the basis of their dispersion relations, we assess the applicability of thin-plate theories, and also approximate thickness-resolving calculations, to tyre vibration modelling.
