If you have a question about this talk, please contact Ruize Li. Advances in radio interferometry have made it possible to image the gravitationally lensed millimetre emission from the immediate surroundings of the supermassive black holes in M87 and SgrA. In this talk prof. Huib van Langevelde (JIVE, Leiden, EHT project director) will describe the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) setup used by the Event Horizon Telescope. The two targets that can be resolved are very different in size, but similar in appearance. The scientists in this global collaboration took extensive measures to verify the robustness of these results before comparing them to predictions of General relativity. The perspectives for future research will be discussed. This talk is part of the Cambridge University Physics Society (CUPS) 2025-2026 Talks series. This talk is included in these lists:
