Abstract
In this talk, we can give a general criterion for the automorphism group of nonelementary hyperbolic groups to be linear in terms of certain epimorphisms from the hyperbolic group to finite products of finite simple groups of Lie type. Potential applications include the question of nonlinearity of mapping class groups.
