If you have a question about this talk, please contact Jack Atkinson. In 2023 at RSE Con I joined in with the Carpentries Offline hack workshop – we aim to provide resources for teaching Carpentries lesson content without internet access, especially important in making these accessible to learners and teachers in low and middle income countries. This includes teaching HPC (without an HPC ): we aimed to develop a mini HPC cluster to demonstrate concepts to learners without access to a full-scale cluster. Given the challenges of connecting to and administering the single-board computing devices that we were using to develop this, in environments where WiFi and internet access may be limited, I began a project to create a KVM “crash cart” adapter at a fraction of the cost, using easily available parts found at a low cost online. This talk discusses the process of creating that tool, the hardware and software, and some of the lessons learned along the way. This talk is part of the RSE Seminars series.
