Abstract
The aim of this talk is to share a taste of the flavourful field that is symplectic topology; what objects it studies, what tools are used to study them, and some of the questions it addresses. Originally brought to light for being the natural setting of Hamiltonian mechanics, symplectic manifolds are fascinating objects whose study will take you on a journey through fields as diverse as low dimensional topology, holomorphic curve theory, A_β categories, mirror symmetry (hence algebraic geometry), dynamical systems, etc. We will give special attention to a useful tool known as moment maps, which formalise the study of symplectic manifolds equipped with quantities conserved by certain symmetries (related to Noetherβs principle in classical mechanics).
