Abstract
The introduction of structural defects in otherwise periodic media is well known to grant exceptional space control and localization of waves in elastic media. In this context, a variety of designs have been proposed so far. However most of them derive from contextual modifications that do not translate into a design paradigm due to the lack of a general theory.Few exceptions include designs endowed with topological dispersion bands, which, however, require changes over substantial portions of the structure. Another possibility is to achieve localized modes by modifying a parameter in only one unit cell in analogy to the “fractional electronic charges”. In this talk I will present examples of both the aforementioned approaches to achieve localized modes in elastic media. I will discuss both their advantages and limitations.
