Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, CEO of Malaysia’s leading sovereign wealth fund for 14 years, is back at Cambridge as a visiting fellow and will share his experiences of pioneering an investment style for what became a USD39bn fund, delivering the triple impact of financial, economic and societal returns – or Building True Value as they named it. Among others, he will share a senior practitioner’s perspective of ESG and impact investing, building sustainable businesses, investing in Asia and technology and leading and managing in a complex investment environment and political economy.

Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar was the Managing Director of Khazanah Nasional Berhad (“Khazanah”), Malaysia’s strategic investment fund from June 2004 to July 2018. During the 14-year period, Khazanah established itself as a leading regional sovereign fund, trebling its portfolio to RM156bn (USD39bn). Its net portfolio value rose to RM115 .6bn (USD29bn) at the end of 2017, an increase of RM82 .3bn or a compounded rate of 9.6% p.a. over the period.

In addition to delivering the financial returns, Azman and his team also pioneered an investment style that delivered significant economic, strategic and societal impact. Their tagline was to undertake “Building True Value” long before concepts such as impact investing, a stakeholder economy, real finance and profit with purpose became increasingly more mainstream in the world of investing as it is today. Among Sovereign Wealth Funds, Khazanah became known as an example of a successful Sovereign Development Fund; impact investing at scale and building sustainable businesses over an increasingly global investment footprint especially in Malaysia, South East Asia, China, India, Turkey, Middle East, Africa and in investing in technology in North America and in Europe.

In this special lecture, Azman will share his experiences and perspectives on this unique investing and corporate journey with many lessons for investing and in business building. Back in Cambridge as a visiting fellow for a year, among the issues and concepts that he will cover from a senior practitioner’s perspective include • Impact and ESG investing • The linkages and fractures between Finance and the Real Economy and how businesses and the investment function can help to bridge this. • The role of and balance between State and Markets instruments in the political economy of development and in the capital formation through investing. • Pushing the investment frontiers – in sectors, in technology, in new geographies, in new investment styles • Tri-sector leadership – the importance and need for multi dimensional leadership in business to address challenges and opportunities in Private, Public and Civil Society sectors.

Prior to Khazanah, Azman was in investment banking and research with UBS and Salomon Smith Barney. He holds an M.Phil in Development Studies (with distinction) from Darwin College, Cambridge as a Chevening Scholar. He is also a chartered cerified accountant (FCCA), a CFA charter holder, a holder of a graduate diploma in Islamic Studies from the International Islamic University and, in 2018, was conferred an honororary doctorate from the Wawasan Open University in Malaysia.

He has served on multiple commercial and public service boards in Malaysia and internationally. Among the accolades received include CEO of the Year and Chairman of the Year in Malaysia in 2016 and 2017 respectively and Most Outstanding Individual for contributions to Islamic Finance (2011). For his services to his nation, Azman was conferred the PSM medal by the King of Malaysia in 2008 which carries the honorary title “Tan Sri”. From 2016 to 2018, he was selected by the World Economic Forum (Davos) to the Board of Stewards for the Future of Economic Progress and the Board of Stewards for the ASEAN Regional Strategy Group and in 2011, he was selected by the World Economic Forum to the Global Agenda Council on the Role of Business.
