Abstract
New fossil discoveries suggest that feathers might have originated 100 million years before the origin of birds. This ties with evo-devo evidence for the commonality of developmental programs for development of scales, feathers and hair, but it puts the cat among the pigeons in terms of our understanding of one of the key transitions in evolution.
