We live on a big old rock, we build on it, dig up minerals from it and tap into it for energy supplies. Each of these engineering activities face challenges related to understanding aspects of how rocks, soils and geological systems behave. Determining stress conditions and responses to loadings of various types is one of these challenges. A few examples of how modelling has been employed to gain a clearer view of expected conditions and behaviours will be discussed. Applications range in scale from many miles to fractions of a millimetre and in time from hundreds of millions of years to a few minutes or seconds.
