VietnamAdd to your list(s) Send you e-mail reminders Tourists can apply Vietnam visa on arrival online and fly to Nha Trang Vietnam. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Alexandre Yersin, a friend and associate of Louis Pasteur. Yersin arrived in Nha Trang in 1891, discovered the plague bacillus, developed the vaccination, and died here in 1943. But Yersin was more than that. He was a scientist interested in everything from aviation to ethnography, and was an expert photographer who photographed ethnic groups and the French outpost of Nha Trang in over 500 glass stereoscopic slides. Initially, he was considered a colonial reactionary by the reunification government, and his beautiful colonial house and observatory were torn down in 1975. Fifteen years later, the Ministry of Culture and Information recognized Yersin as a hero, and funded a museum in his honor. Since then, conservator Truong Thi Thuy Nga has put together an important museum detailing his work. Nga studied biology herself in Paris, and considers Yersin to be her personal passion. In the museum, you’ll see his letters, photographs, personal effects, scientific instruments, and furniture, including his deathbed. Especially interesting are four dioramas hand-painted by talented French high school students, and donated to Nga for the museum. If you’re fortunate, Nga will show you one or two of his glass stereoscopic images. Work still needs to be done, as Yersin’s photographic plates deserve a book. The museum is a tribute to two individuals, Yersin, for his outstanding scientific contributions, and Nga, for her exceptional curatorial work. The museum is located adjacent to the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang, on the cornice in the center of town. Tel: (0258) 822-406. Open 8-11 am, 2-4:30 pm.
